Breast surgery, either lumpectomy or mastectomy, is one of the first steps in treating breast cancer. After a surgeon has removed the tumor, a pathologist will examine it under a microscope and determine the tumor type and characteristics such as hormone receptor status and HER2/neu status. These factors will help guide the rest of your treatment.
Although you have not had surgery yet, you may know whether the tumor is somewhat small orsomewhat large, whether any lymph nodes are enlarged or whether you have inflammatory breast cancer.
